Savage Species (4th ed.)

Savage Species is a set of rules published by Wizards of the Coast for version 3.x of Dungeons & Dragons. It was a set of rules to allow monsters to be played as player characters.

The purpose of this article is to provide guidelines to accomplish the same thing in 4th edition. There is not intention to encroach upon the intellectual property of Wizards of the Coast.

Guidelines

Abilitiy Scores

  • +2 to two different ability scores is the standard.
  • Option to divide this among more abilities.
  • Option to include negative modifier to increase positive modifiers.
  • Maximum of +4 total ability modification.

Size

  • Small to Large should be the boundries

Speed

  • 6 is average (Human, etc.)
  • 5 is acceptable (Dwarf)
  • 7 is acceptable (Eladrin)
  • At will Flying is banned.

Vision

  • Normal
  • Low-light
  • Darkvision – should be limited (range, dazzled by sunlight, etc.)

Languages

  • 2 languages known is standard.

Skill Bonus

  • +2 to two different skills
  • Option to divide this among more skills.
  • Option to include negative modifier to increase positive modifiers.
  • Maximum of +4 total skill modification.

Resistance

  • Bonus to a save type
  • Conditions may apply

Heritage

  • Notes on heritage — may be susceptible to items that effect your heritage (i.e. fey, dragon, etc.).

Misc

  • One to two additional bonuses that do not effect abilities or saves, but do not equal a power.

Racial Power

  • One racial power to start.
  • Additional racial powers may be available at specific levels or above.
    • May be chosen instead of a normal power at a given level.
    • May replace an existing power (as if retraining).
